Can you save by splitting buildings and contents insurance?

I'm about to move house and need to get buildings insurance for the first time.
Is there anything to be said for using seperate suppliers for the contents insurance or is it usually cheaper to have both with the same company?

            Depends really
Some underwriters will give you a discount for having both, sometimes its cheaper to go with seperate companies and sometimes its cheaper to have a combined buildings/contents cover. All depends on your own circumstances, where you live, the kind of cover you want, your claims history etc etc.
If you go somewhere that searches through lots of comapnies like https://www.confused.com and put in your details it will give you all the options then you can decide.
Dont forget cheaper is not always the best option if it does not give you the cover you require so readt what you are getting for your money carefully

            Hi
Personally we keep our home contents and buildings insurance together.
Purely because should we say for example : we lost loads of roof tiles in stormy weather, and this could water damage to the building but also to our contents, there would only be 1 excess to pay.
If you had them seperate, you'd claim on your buildings for the roof & any other building damage, and then you'd have to make another claim on your contents for the damage caused.. therefore paying out for 2 excess.
It's really a personal choice, but thats why we have the two together anyway.

Combining both is much better, it happened that we had to make a claim and the paperwork was massive when dealing with 2 seperate firms. One saying the other was liable etc. Using 1 firm for both means that they are usually quicker in sorting out claim.0

On the flip side of this I have my buildings and contents seperate and when I needed to claim for the same incident but from both buildings and contents, I had absolutely no problems.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

IMO the best way to go about this is to go thru Quidco and have separate buildings and contents policies - with the same company! My mate has just done this with Barclays, OK he didn't gte the paltry discount for a joint policy, but there is the small matter of £250 cashback to add into the mix!0
