"The dangerous part of the tube is the anode where the high voltage lead connects on the back of the tube and should always be discharged before working on it." how do you do that practically. Thanks for any replies.

Large screwdriver with insulated handle, connect a wire to the metal shaft and to earth with crocodile clips, gently ease the blade under the CRT anode cover keeping fingers well away from the metal and wait for the crack as it earths, and be warned a small charge can build up again on the anode even though it is not connected so keep fingers away from it or earth it again before handling.

Discharging in that way (although widely used in TV workshops, and by myself in the distant past when the correct tool wasn't available) is not the correct way and can lead to damage of the tube. There are correct tools for the job which contain a high value resistor in the handle so that the tube discharges slowly rather than violently as in the method above and in espressos link.
