  • for 700 quid i would be looking for a wee runner with 10/11 months MOT on it and a bit of tax

I may be able to get up to 900 - have to see how it goes --

but 140 is a 6th of the value of the car --

I think ill take a mate along

and give them 20 quid or so ----

---- car dealers are more trustworthy than some unknown random on a street imho

cheers for your answers and happy new yr

A car dealer is someone you don't know, on a street.

Exactly. It's also someone who wants to make £500 out of every car he sells. And with a scrap car worth £200 you can see what sort of car you're going to get for £700 from a dealer.
  • try gumtree im looking just now gonna spend around £800 should get 9/12 months mot wee bit of tax on a somthing like a fiesta corsa micra

    hope this helps
just because you are paranoid doesnt mean to say they are not out to get you

plus all the good bangers went in the great scrappage fiasco and only aunt matildas car survived but thats being kept by her son as a future classic

Very true unfortunately. A dealer pointed this out to me when I was buying my first car (when scrappage was still around). Apparently there were lovely old classics - minis and moggie minors being scrapped.

To the OP, at that price I wouldn't bother, as you say its a large chunk of the overall price and is likely to have little things wrong with it that don't matter too much. Have a read of this:

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/buy_sell/buying_used/the-two-golden-rules/

and also HJs and Parkers car by car guides. In fact print them out and take them with you as a checklist. Its what I've always done. And yes, do get a mate who knows about cars to come with you. When I buy or go to see a car I try and take a friend even though I'm the one who knows about cars! Just for a second opinion and moral support if you like. Your friend isn't going to get all excited as you over a car he isn't going to buy or own himself so will be able to point out rational things like 'x doesn't work' when you might be thinking 'its shiny, I want it'. I exaggerate to make my point of course.

Also, how long have you had a licence? Is insurance expensive for you? If not, or even if it is (you might be surprised), consider a bigger car - vectras and mondeos for instance, rather than corsas and fiestas. Bigger cars are cheaper atm because everyone wants a silly little econobox because fuel is expensive. Plus you get a more powerful car with more buttons if you're bothered about that kinda thing (I am :p ).

What a load of scaremongering nonsense.

Raelly? So you would advise the OP to not bother and drive away car that could be potentially unroadworthy, without getting it checked over?

Is the £700 - £900 including the £2000 you will need for insurance and tax?

    Yes, that's right.
Just like the overwhelming majority of used car buyers do every single day without incident.

So, with that approach, you should be advising that no one should ever have a car inspected, ever. Would you consider that approriate advice to give anyone?
