It's home improvement loans only that are allowable on this.

Child benefit/tax credit is counted in the assessment, however it is counted as part of the student's income, not the partners. When you assess whether the student has an adult dependent, it offsets the maximum available to the student in the form of grants, loans and child benefit/tax credit against the net income of the partner. If the total for the student exceeds that of the partner, then they can be assessed for ADG.

If you want some further reading on the assessment process, the link below should help.

  • First of all, Taiko let me say thanks SO much for that link... clears up so many things that have confused me.

There are two things I'm still a little unsure about:

Para 90 suggests that 'automotive insurance' might be a deductible expense. I thought it definitely wasn't.

Para 67 gives a 'maximum level' of partner's income for full childcare grant. Presumably this is income after deduction (mortgage etc)? Ie 'residual income'? Para 88 implies that CCG is calculated on income less deductions, but the table in para 67 worries me - I might be a bit close to the top, but our outgoings (mtg) are quite big and out residual income is low.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you (and of course other experts here) taking the time to help...
