    Thanks for all your advice mr fishbulb. Some serious investigation now follows. I've looked briefly at the techspot link, and it certainly refers to XP in the screenshot, although I couldn't see any ref to defrag under XP. I guess if this is disabled, you'd have to defrag the HHD manually from time to time.

    The reason you defrag a traditional hard drive is it takes time for the heads to move across the disk from one place to another. If you are reading a file which has one part at the beginning of the drive and one part at the end, there will be a delay (after reading the first part) for the heads to move to the beginning of the second part.

    SSDs however have no moving parts. It's just as quick for them to jump between the beginning and end of the storage space than it is to read sequentially. They don't need to be defragged. In fact defragging your SSD will reduce the life by writing when it doesn't need to.

    You'll also want to put the virtual memory on the traditional drive and not the SSD.
