The point of the thread was to help me make up my mind, and it has, i'm going to say i went over on my ankle and the bone broke. which it did, so be truthful but vague. cheers for the input.
What if they ask how it happened? The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

was walking caught the edge of a kerb and went over on ankle, or a variation therein. metatarsal bones break quite easily apparently.Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face - Mike Tyson0 -
Hopefully they wont read this thread lol0

This is one of those situations where a small simple "white lie" can turn into something much bigger - and could even be used as an excuse to get rid of you if your employer was looking for an excuse.
Are you on facebook ? - (if so, are details on there about the injury) ?
Do any of your colleagues know how the injury happened ?
Do any of your friends or relatives know any of your colleagues ?
In my opinion, if you answered yes to any of the above quastions then the truth will come out sooner or later so you might as well be honest.0 -

good luck with your lie. im sure that HR won't have ever heard of that injury being related to football before. so your bound to get away with it.0

What if Occupational Health asks for a medical report - when you got the break treated, would they have noted how you broke the leg on your medical records? Show willing to do alternative work, and hopefully your employer will be understanding (it would be a pretty rubbish employer who penalised you for playing sport).
I can understand why you might be embarassed about the real reason for the break if - for example - you'd got hammered and tripped, but accidents will happen and there's nothing wrong about playing football. If you lie you're taking a big risk - you could get fired and given you a bad enough reference that you'll struggle to find work - and I'm not even sure you've got a reason to think you'll lose out by telling the truth.0 -
This whole thread is rediculous!
Op is desperate to lie about something that he really doesn't need to lie about! As others had stated over and over again, it probably will come out in the wash and potentially could cause him to lose him job.
Just tell the !!!!ing truth... THE END0 -
You don't really have to go straight in with the FULL truth so long as you don't lie, in my opinion, and so long as it's not obvious that you're avoiding telling the full story. Start with "broken bone", and then if they ask for more details just say it was playing football. Don't dance around further than that. It's honest enough to not make you seem like you were avoiding telling the truth, but a better middle ground than straight away saying "I broke a bone playing football!". If you're 95% sure it would be OK anyway, and there's a chance they won't ask for elaboration, then you could increase your chances of not losing money to... 97% maybe?

If i had to balance the slight risk of losing a tiny bit of sick pay Vs getting sacked for lieing and losing a bucket load of cash...! I know which i would go for0
