Menorca

Am looking to try and organise a holiday to menorca for my family of 5 for the end May/beginning of June.
I want to try and do it reasonably cheaply so am thinking of doing flights, villa and car hire myself, but have never organised a holiday like this before, and I have not been to menorca before either, so any tips/information would be welcomed. Our kids are 8,5 and 5 and are happy with a beach and pool and sun. We tend to like quieter areas, a few restaurants but not noisy nightlife areas. Thanks

  • Menorca is beautiful. I fell in love with the resort of Santo Tomas and went there 6 times. It is very quiet; not a massive choice of restaurants but enough, level access to the beach and lovely walks in the area.
I have to admit I haven't been there for almost 8 years though so my knowledge may be out of date.
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

  • We done the exact same as you a few years back and chose Cala 'n' Forcat due to the availability of cheap villas.
Booked the 3 bedroom villa through Thomson, Sol Villa(with private pool).
    Booked flights through flythomascook.
Car hire was through an online agent, we got a convertible Megane for the same price as a regular 'economy' car.

Cala 'n' Forcat is pretty quiet, has a music square where there are about 6/8 pubs around a stage with entertainment on every night. Plenty restaurants in the area to satisfy all tastes/budgets.
There is also a decent water park there(I think it was the only one on the island) to keep the kids entertained.

Unfortunately, there is no decent beach on the doorstep, there is a cove but no sweeping golden sands, fortunately, Menorca is quite small, roads quiet and there are plenty of beaches within a half hour drive.

There are a couple of small supermarkets in the area, but just outside, on the approach from Ciutadella, there is a good sized, reasonably priced supermercado.

Ciutadella (5 mins drive) is a lovely place to visit, nice buildings/churches, I prefer it to the modern capital of Mahon.

    Hope some of this helps!

Got to be Son Bou, Sant Jamie area, sounds perfect for you, been there for the past 5 years and love it, going back this year to, nice and relaxing, great for kids with evening entertainment (during peak times) and probably one of the best beaches on the island!

I have actually been looking at a package holiday in this area but would prefer a self build 'Villa' holiday.
Does Son Bou have any established areas where villas can be found?

There are villas all over Son Bou, take a look on this site as i think there is an owners section where people advertise their own villas they rent out:

Here is a selection from finishingtouch.co.uk (if it works) which advertises on the Menorca site

Binibeca as plenty of villas. Close to Mahon so no long distance trip once you get there, village is busy during the day as it is a tourist spot, but after dark it is quiet. Beach a short walk, but most villas have a pool. We booked a people carrier through economycarhire which was about £300 for a week 4 years ago.
