Need to borrow about £4k

I need the money to do up the garden a bit.
Whats the best way for me to do this.
my credit rating is pretty good so I could probably get a small loan, but I don't like the big interest rates they charge.
Is there a cheaper way. Could i ask my bank to give me an overdraft would that be any cheaper?.
Or even open a credit card is there a way to keep transferring balances as I keep hearing some people do.
I can pay off about £300 per month.
I maybe take a mortgage holiday (I'm with nationwide i think they offer something like that)

What sort of garden do you have where you need £4K to 'do it up a bit'? Have you pitched a tent in Kew Gardens?

Tesco and M&S currently offer 0% interest on new purchases for 15 months if you apply for the right credit card.

If you are allocating £300 per month to this project, that means you can spend £4,000 on 800 garden gnomes at B&Q (or whatever else you have in mind) and by paying back £300 per month to the credit card, you will have cleared the balance before being charged a penny in interest.

This of course only works if you are planning on spending the money on purchases from garden centres, diy stores, etc - if you are looking to pay a tradesman or landscape gardener, you may need to check if credit cards are accepted, as the quoted deals above are for new credit card purchases.
  • Why not save some money over the winter months so that come spring you've got some savings to use and you can borrow less?
It is going to be a very expensive garden when you factor in the interest. Do you really need to borrow for this????
  • Oh. My 2nd post didn't post....
Stuart I wanted to say what a good idea your gnomes are.
On that basis I can understand the OPs desire to get money together immediately so they can buy 800 while they're still in stock, regardless of the final cost to them. :rotfl:

The thing I can't get my head around is not spending £4000 on a garden.
It's that once you've committed yourself to it, why would you care about the odd percent here or there?

A 10% loan makes that £4000 into £4400 in a year. If you're going to chuck £4k on a garden, how can £400 make that much difference? Couldn't you just, well, buy 80 less gnomes?

You could always try Freecycle for the gnomes ;)
