Can I cancel my British Gas contract?

Hi

I signed up over the phone for a British Gas dual fuel contract till 2014. in Dec 11..I was sent post that gave me 7 days cooling off but due to family illness, this date has long since passed. I am due to have my supply taken over on 11/1 (Gas) and 20/1(Elec) and have changed my mind about going over to BG. Do I have any rights in wanting to cancel? All advice gratefully received.

It would be too late to cancel now with the reason of failing to stop it during cool-off. It would have to be an unauthorised switch (them taking over without your consent) to stop it this late in the game, something called an erroneous transfer.

You can leave them once your supply starts, but unfortunately PP 2014 comes with a £50 cancellation fee, which will only be waived if you move property. If you can save enough money switching away - even with the cancellation fee - go for it. Are you dual fuel though, as it will be a £100 fee?
