Scraping old car - documentation
Hi
I'm planning to scrap my car, its old and UN repairable. Its is still drivable and I'm planning to take it to an dvla authorised scrap yard to do so.
But I need some advise in the documentation side of scraping.
Its a voluntary scraping, not accident related. do I need to declare SORN or is there any other way of getting my Road Tax back like the scrap notification certificate done by the scrap yard etc.
How do I present this case to my Insurance company, I've got 7 months left on my Tesco car insurance, will they exempt me from the cancellation fee, the car is mechanically failed, do I need to tell them the whole story ?
Thanks in advance

Fill out the slip to say you have sold it to a motor trader (which a scrap yard is) You don't need to declare it SORN as you won't be the owner anymore and can keep the tax.
More than likely you will have the pay a cancellation fee on the policy, unless you are buying a replacement car in which case you can just transfer the policy over to your new car.0 -

Thanks for the quick reply, so once I hand over the reg paper work to the scrap yard dvla be sending me a cheque for the reminder of the road tax or do I need to claim it.0 -
You need to claim it. Go to the Directgov website Motoring section where it tells you what you need to do.0

Years ago now, but when I reclaimed tax, I had to send the tax disc back - so don't leave it in the car unless procedures have changed since then.0

take the disc out. dvla will want it if your getting a refund...
get the right form from post office or download one from the direct.gov site.
the scrap yard "should" issue a COD (destruction certificate) which will mean dvla will automatically be informed the car is gone/scrapped if not fill in the yellow slip with the scrappers details on it and send off to dvla dont trust them to do it they will retain the rest of the log book
send of the tax disc and it takes about 6 weeks to process the refund..
use cartakeback.com then you wont have to drive it there unless they pay more if you drop it off.
as for the insurance im not 100%Sealed pot challenger # 10

it's unlikely you'll be exempt from a cancellation fee as you're cancelling your insurance. Sold the car, scrapped it, pushed it over a cliff etc; they still want their 30 pieces of gold.
You don't need to tell them anything apart from you want to cancel your insurance. They'll more than likely ask why and then you just tell them it's fubared so you scrapped it.0 -
You take the tax disc out when you arrive at the scrap yard, then post it back to the DVLA with this form http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065248.pdf0

Thanks for all those who replied, I really appreciate it, especially about removing the tax disc.
Cartakeback is offering me £170 for this car, I think I might go for it, this is an auto mondeo and the gearbox is on its last legs, I don't expect anything more for this vehicle.0
