Tesco Petrol Station CCTV

Whilst at a tesco petrol station last thursday, my car got keyed. :(

So obviously i went back into the station and told the "temporary" manager what had happened, he came out and looked at the car and basically said "thats a !!!!!!". However, he couldn't do anything as they didn't have CCTV on the pumps.

Does anyone else find this very hard to believe/know who i should contact tesco wise to say, frankly, what the hell! It happened to my friend at asda too.

I know this is moneysaving and this doesnt really relate to it, but i would expect a company like tescos to afford security! plus i can't claim on my insurance as i am only 18 and premiums are high enough already.

cheers!

  • Go and speak to the store general manager, don't get fobbed off by other 'managers'.

Although TBH, I don't think it's Tesco's problem unless the damage was caused by somebody connected with Tesco Stores Ltd

Go and look. You should be able to see the cameras.Very unusual not to have it .If CCtv is there they also have to display a sign saying so by law.If its been reported to the Police, they are likely to need to view it.It you havent reported it,then they wont let you view it.
  • Isn't there an issue here with DPA.

Seem to recall Mark Thomas doing a few stunts re. private businesses who were recording stuff on CCTV.

Basically they are obliged to release this to you if you request and pay the relevant cost (this is maximised).

It might depend on how the images are stored.

Do some googling on DPA and maybe Mark Thomas Comedy Product.... you might find something of use on the subject.

Personally I don't believe for one moment they don't have CCTV at their petrol station, I think they just couldn't be bothered to assist you. If you'd driven off without paying it'd be a completely different story, believe me.

You can do what the previous poster refers to - it's called a Subject Access Request under the Data Protection Act. It costs £10 and they have to send you every last scrap of information they hold about you, including any CCTV footage.

But don't expect them to comply with it - mine was a whitewash with lots of incriminating things deliberately omitted. The Information Commissioner is currently investigating.

Tesco aren't terribly keen on complying with the law.

Why would you want to pay £10 to view it when the Police should do this for free.In addition you need special equipment to view the tapes or discs,as they are usually recorded in time lapse.

Good point - never thought of that! Get the old bill involved, it's what they get paid for.

lot of garages don't have CCTV and usually have signs stating that the operators will manually record your details ie write down your registration should you make off without payment.

However, i would query with the store manager, in writing, explaining what had occurred and specifically ask if they do or do not have CCTV there.

Step 1: Visit petrol station again, donning baloclava and large jerry can.

Step 2: Proceed to fill your car up and the jerry can.

Step 3: Place jerry can into boot.

Step 4: Return to vehicle and drive off.

Step 5: CCTV footage will have mysteriously appeared of the scene and caught you in the act.

    :D

P.S: This is a completely infallible plan... :o

Under the DPA you only have the right to get all the info held on you for £10 for data that is held in an organised manner. It has previously been ruled that CCTV tapes are not considered organised for the terms of DPA as basically someone cant go to a shelf and pull off a folder with all the video containing shots of you over the last 6 months (or however long they keep them for)

As a former claims handler I have tried to get hold of CCTV footage many times as they showed accidents involving our policyholders. On many occasions there was no CCTV, on occasions where there was and we got hold of it then the quality was generally so poor you couldnt tell anything by it anyway and the biggest problem was that many companies would only release it to us on standard VHS or AVI format after having paid for a company to blank out the faces and registrations of other vehicles/ people on the scene generally with a bill of around £300-500
