Bloody Wall is Peeling!

Hi there

We painted our dining room when we moved in a year ago. We painted over the emulsion which was already on the walls.

Now, I have a dryer in the understairs cupboard, and I think this has caused the paint on the other side of the wall to lift (possibly the condensation or the heat?) and peel. I now have a lovely patch of bare plaster on my dining room wall.

I am pretty sure this is because the old residents didn't do a mist coat when they had the dining room replastered, but I need to know the best way to tackle it. Do I need to strip all the wall back and repaint? Please say no!

What paint did you use and what was the paint that you painted over?

    Cheers

  • I am not entirely sure what they used - probably straightforward matt emulsion judging from the other rooms in the house.

    I used silk emulsion.

So it wasn't matt straight over silk then? Thats a relief but yes it does sound as though the new plaster wasn't prepped properly. Do I need to say the next bit before ducking behind the parapet or can you work it out and thus save me taking the flak?

Oh Gawd! At least it peels easily!

Would it make a difference if it they did use silk?

Yes because matt doesn't stick to silk and it crazes or just comes off.

If it was badly prepped, then it might peel off easily using a metal scraper, with a chisel edge. Just take care not to press too hard and gouge grooves into the wall.

Almost certainly silk or as sugested - wasnt prepped correctly (ie 50/50 mist coat.

Silk is a knightmare to go over. I wont plaster striaght onto silk as it gives me no end of problems. I tried to get away with it ONCE (never again) by skimming straight onto it on a small ceiling some years ago. A whole sheet of plaster came away from the ceiling.

I know people "think" painting and decorating can be done by just about anyone - your post proves this to be complete tosh - theres more to decorating than people give decs credit for.
