Stolen car keys/Insurance

Afternoon,
I am hoping someone may be able to offer a few words of advice on my current situation.
Last night my handbag was stolen from a friend's house, it contained my house keys, car keys and a whole bunch of cards. I'm unsure whether there was anything in the bag with my address on, but I suspect there may have been... I wish I could remember for my own peace of mind! But anyway, I've had my house locks changed to be on the safe side and cancelled the cards but the issue remains of my car keys.
Firstly, I have secured the car, away from my home address and locked away so there is no chance it can be stolen at this point in time if they do know where I live.
However longer term, I need to use the car! I suspect if I continued using it as normal and it was stolen, using the stolen keys that I would not be covered by the insurance as they are likely to say I did not take sufficient steps to keep it safe or inform them of the change in circs. Am I right in thinking I am expected to change the locks???
I have looked at my policy, and it is not clear whether car keys are included as standard if you do not take the specific added extra for key cover. There is reference to keys in other areas of the policy, but not specifically what I am entitled to, if anything, to cover the cost of replacing the locks. Could anyone tell me whether there is anything at all covered by AXA if you do not take out additional key cover???
And last question, does anyone have any idea how much it would be likely to cost to replace the locks on a 3 year old suzuki swift (keyless entry system)??? I have just moved house and after christmas as well I am absolutely flat broke, I have a feeling this is going to cost me a fortune!!!! :(
I hope it was worth the £20 that they got from my purse, that is all they will have got from it and probaly dumped the rest of it in a bin somewhere but I cant afford to risk it because if my car was stolen and insurance didnt pay out I'd be in a whole world of trouble and definitely wouldnt be able to afford a new car!!!!
Any advice or observations much appreciated.
Thanks

Where did you buy your Axa cover eg direct, through a broker or through Swift etc

As far as I can remember I bought it direct, online. Probably found the deal through something like moneysupermarket but bought direct from their website. Would that be likely to make a difference?

On your Policy Schedule, does it show section "M" as being operative

Sadly not, I never get those additional covers because until this experience I've generally thought if you're careful you'll be ok... but obviously that was a mistake! However I'm wondering whether there is any hope from section B - under 'we will not pay' there is a statement as follows:

    for the replacement of keys or locks due to theft of keys (or keyless entry system) unless we agree that your keys (or keyless entry system) were stolen by a person knowing the location of your car and you continue to be insured with us (the maximum we will pay in this instance is £500);

    What do you think?

I would think you would be although difficult to see without reading it in context.

however you might want to weigh up the cost of the job itself v your excess before you put in a claim

Try the Suzuki dealer, probably they can re- set up a car key electronically and cancel any older ones. Certainly could for my Citroen.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

Can you tell us more about it being stolen from your friend's house? Were you staying there and somebody broke in, or were there other people there and it "went missing"?

Reason being that if it is possible the thief was someone you know, you could argue that the key were stolen by a person who does know the location of the car...
  • Probably need to replace the control unit in the car and re-programme your remaining key plus any new ones.

Many car keys can be canceled & re-set by a main dealer,in the meantime, fit a quality steering wheel lock & hand brake lock.
