The salvage places are worse than the insurance companies in my experience.

Check that they haven't cashed in your road tax and drained your petrol tank (most likely into one of their own cars) too. Also check that all your belongings are still there and it's not missing any parts.

At least yours got delivered back to the same city. We had to go get ours ourselves at our own expense from bloody Essex.
  • I imagine if you asked one, they'd say draining the fuel tank is a safety measure; it is, of course, just stealing, though. If I have cause to use one ever again, I'll be taking a photo of the guage first.

If the car is just being stored because the owner is going to buy it back, they are intentionally removing something of value that isn't theirs from the car, thus permanently depriving the owner of that thing.

It's no different to them taking the Tom-Tom the owner left in the glovebox.

I had a Mini written off years ago, after recovery and delivery to me a few weeks later, the battery, the radio, and a few other parts were missing and a seatbelt was partially removed. Luckily I had removed my tools and other items before recovery. I now keep a few large bags in the car so I can empty it before removal.

It's not new. I was in a scrapyard years ago, the guy was offering me the parts I wanted off the insurance recoveries he was storing for the owners.
