Fascia, Soffits and Bargeboards UPVC or Paint - Wiltshire

Hi,
Just bought a 4 bed detached property in Wiltshire and need to address some maintenance issues.
House built in 1998 with UPVC Windows, but wood barge bards and fascias.
The barge a fascias are tatty, with a couple of small areas needing some repair. The house is gable ended, and has one dormer window with boards above the window and on each side.
access is generally ok, however conservatory on back (10 ft wide) which will need bridging over.
Have had a 2 quotes so far
a) Paint existing, repair as necessary - 96 hours labour. Price including materials and VAT £1800
b) Replace all wood with UPVC items, approx 65m, new kiln dried wood on fascias with clad then over that - Inc VAT £3600
Fair prices??
Any recommendations for North Wilts

We had our bungalow facias and guttering replaced in August. It still involved tower scaffolding, and a porch and greenhouse to work over. I think it was £2300 or £2400, the extension didn't need doing, but all in all I guess there was approx 35 meters.
We used a local independent firm based south of Bath.0 -

So many firms are still removing wood, then fitting wood and cladding. Not a good idea. Thick Jumbo fascia straight to the afters which is what we had. Google Mw Roofline, small company in Birmingham but they've done my parents house in Slough.
£3600 not bad as long as they ditched the silly clad the wood idea.
Good luck :cool:0 -
cladding over wood is ridiculous. Most of the rot on fascias and bargeboards works from the inside out. Water permeates on the verge pointing on gables and runs down usually rottting what is known as the 'box end' which is where the bargeboard meets the fascia. Also on the eaves, where your felt is perished, any water that finds its way under the tiles simply falls inside and obviously has to escape. With cladding over timber you also get the problem of condensation between the two surfaces which is also trapped. Your fascias will look fine but inside wet rot will start to attack your rafters. Like the poster above says, use a thick upvc replacement board. I would also recommend a solid soffit, (the ones with vents are impossible to clean and look terrible after a few years. Instead use a rigid eaves protector (EPS) which has a continuous vent built into it to meet regs. This is fitted over the top of the fascia board and is therefore hidden. For the job you should be expecting to pay around £80 per linear m. £ 50 is usually the price to cap over existing. Much cheaper and ask yourself where corners are being cut.0
