Beating Insurance Renewals?

So this has happened a few times now and I was looking for some advice.
Recently I received my car insurance renewal from a well known company. Lets not call them Admiral, no that would be wrong... anyway.
My renewal was £330 so I went to check on all the price comparisons to check it is a good deal.
The result from all my searches was that the cheapest insurance quote was actually from my current insurance provider and it was cheaper than the renewal I had been quoted.
The last time this happened I phoned the company and had a very long conversation (unnecessarily long as they said we will "just double check your current details") and the "best price we can give you" was £333 or something similar.
Basically can I phone to cancel a renewal and then take out a new policy with the same company?
Ps. The exact same thing has just happened with my Pet insurance with my renewal being £22 a month however the exact same deal on the website is £17.

Nothing stopping you at all. Best off phoning up and confirming in writing by recorded delivery. Cancel any direct debits / standing orders as well.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. You need to be careful with pet Insurance.. they have an exclusion stating 'They will not cover any pre existing condition'. May get a bit tricky as if any condition flares up again from say a year ago your new policy may not cover that condition as it existed prior to the cover starting and your old policy will of been cancelled. Need to be very careful on pet insurance.0

Thank you flossy for the cash back reminder!
I just went through Quidco and saw Sainsburys did a pet insurance cashback offer. Ended up getting better pet insurance for £1.50 a month cheaper then my current insurance (£6.50 cheaper then the renewal!) and i got £80 cashback! Wooo!
adamc260: Thankfully our dog currently has no existing conditions. She is just 2 but I will keep that advice in my head for the future.

Some insurers dont care and allow you to do it, some are getting smarter and identifying your a returning customer and so serving up the same quote as your renewal. Cashback T&Cs could prevent them paying out if you've been a customer in the last X months/ years but then cashback is always to be seen as a nice bonus and not guaranteed0
