Or there could be a 'loyalty card' for the railways for which you rack up points for every journey made during the year (perhaps you acquire more points for travelling at off-peak hours or on underused services). You could then trade these points for journeys at a future date. Of course, this venture would require a bit of imagination, and for the government and the rail companies to work together, which will probably rule it out.
