I've got a few rooms of painted wood chip paper to remove - been avoiding it for a long time. We do have a steamer I think so will probably use that. However I have seen this stuff called simplestrip by wallwik. The two products the cloth/cover and solution are supposed to make the job a lot easier. Anyone tried it or have any other recommendations besides from the usual scour and steam method...? thanks this was the product I was looking at. http://www.simplestrip.co.uk/steps-strippable

It will not work, as your woodchip is one part paper not anaglypta which is what this stuff is for. Also you're woodchip is probably painted, so all you can do is score it many times with a stanley knife, use your steamer and curse the swine who put it up.
Oh and you'll find it easier if after scoring the paper with a knife you use a hand spray to soak it with washing up liquid in hot water, leave for half an hour, stick pins in a wax doll of the swine who put it up and then steam and repeat process until you die of old age or burn the place down in exasperation.
There is a special place in Hell for people who put woodchip up, next to the section for polystyrene celling tiles and Artex. :mad:My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
get one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stanley-Maxi-Orbital-Wallpaper-Scorer/dp/B0001IWE4G/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1325412354&sr=8-8
then soak the paper and then steam off0 -
Jnelhams is correct the wetter you can get the paper and the longer you soak it the easier it will lift away with a steam stripper ,just dont spray to much water near sockets otherwise they go pop.Not an easy job especially If its well stuck. The scorer mentioned works quite well but a Knife will do but tends to scratch into the plaster If your heavy handed0

This made me smile. I remember trying all methods to remove woodchip from a bedroom a few years back. I have to be honest, it was heart breaking work. The paper came off in postage stamp sizes and my hands were raw by the time I finished the room. I did take the approach of doing a bit each day because it was very demotivating. If we ever got a piece off bigger than a postage stamp a little cheer went up!!
I couldnt stick pins into a wax doll because it was my parents who put the stuff up and I love them very much! :rotfl:0 -
well I'll post back and let you know how I got on. I have to say I did get the wallwick stuff. I got some cashback and out of desperation I thought I'd try it....0

I found the best thing for removing wood chip is a spray bottle with water and a drop of washing up liquid. It didnt take me long to do my hall landing and stairs, where as I spent 4 hours and only cleared a metre square using water and a sponge!0

Painted paper is harder to remove as the water doesn't go through the paint very quickly. Wood chip paper is thicker too and there may be multiple coats of paint. There is however an easy method.
You need to scratch the surface of the paper to break through the paint, but not so much as to damage the wall behind. A wire brush is ideal I found for quickly creating many evenly spaced scrapes through the paint. Then use a sponge or spray bottle with hot water and a bit of washing up liquid (lowers surface tension of water to encourage it to spread through the paper fibres). Don't however start scraping right away, leave it 15 minutes to soak in and see if it comes off easily after that. If not, wet and wait again for 15 minutes. Usually after this it comes off really easily, but where the paper is thick and there's lots of paint I've had to wet the wall up to three times before it reaches the point where it falls off easily.
Anyway, if you're scraping lots the glue layer is just too dry and it needs more time/water/more scratches through the paint to aid absorption before it comes off easily.0
