Opening Irish account from uk?

Is it possible to open a bank account in Dublin from the uk or does one require an Irish address?

thanks

  • DH had to open one when he was working in Dublin. Did indeed need an Irish adress and to present ID- worth noting that they wouldn't accept his Irish passport as a valid form which meant I had to fly out with his birth certificate. He was able to move all the money out online once back in the UK but hadto go across in person to close the account. Hope that helps

  • It says a lot about the banking system that they refused an official document that is difficult to copy/forge but accepted a lesser one (birth certificate)!
In Uk it would be done the other way round - birth certificates are normally not accepted as ID if you are over 18 years of age.

You can open one as a non resident, but you'll need to be there to open the account, they will likely ask the purpose of the account - other than that it's a simple enough process.
  • thankyou that really helps

No problem, there's a Bank of Ireland in Dublin airport - although the staff there aren't overly helpful, and if you don't have business connected with the airport will try to send you into the city, but it's worth a shot
  • Yea, I'm a resident of the UK, in Northern Ireland, and was able to open an account in the Republic of Ireland no problem. I did have to go to the bank to open the account but apart from that no problems. Granted it's definately easier for someone from NI to travel to the Republic than someone from GB.

You can apply for an Ulsterbank (Republic) step account online, they'll just send you the forms to your UK address. All the processing is done in Belfast. Its also the cheapest bank in the Republic, the others have charges for day to day banking unless your funding it regularly.
