shared house contents insurance

Options
Would appreciate some advice...

I am a postgraduate (PhD) student living with my partner in a shared house. We both have a regular monthly income. I've always used Endsleigh student insurance, but since we moved in together the amount of cover I need has increased. It's time to renew my insurance and I'm having some problems, either:

1. "regular" insurance companies (e.g. barclays) won't insure us - small print says 'no students' and although we could put our job descriptions as 'postgraduate researcher' I'm sure if it came down to it on a claim they'd have us on that point and declare it invalid insurance

2. companies that will insure us claim they can't insure people in shared houses. But what do young professionals do?! In this economic climate most graduate friends I have are still in shared houses - student or not.

3. Student insurance (e.g. Endsleigh student) won't cope with the increased level of cover we need since we have more than your typical undergraduate's possessions.

Any reccomendations for companies that will happily cover those living in a shared house (we don't want to insure everyone in the house, just us) but who want to insure more than a few hundred pounds worth of clothes and shoes?

Thanks in advance...and happy new year!

Our daughter has been with Endsleigh since 2003, first as a BSc student, then as a PhD student, now she is employed (though has not told Endsleigh yet).

Endsleigh have consistently been cheapest for her, she has £21k on contents with accidental damage and personal possessions too. Also legal cover. About £140 renewal now I think. Would reduce now she is employed.

She owns her flat and has always insured the furniture etc plus her own stuff, her lodger insured his own stuff.

We did look at other companies that insure students but found that Endsleigh was the best in this situation, and pretty flexible too.

Could you use parents' insurance? Many companies cover student possessions away from home as standard.
