Extend an already converted loft?

My flat (first floor of an edwardian conversion) has a loft, which was converted by the previous owners. However, the loft conversion seems to have been done within the existing roof area only (no dormer conversion used). Loft conversion only uses approx. 40% of the equivalent space of the floor below, seems a bit of a waste to not use more. Is it possible to extend this further with a dormer (subject to planning permission etc? Please could you advise / help

Yes, we're in the same position and intend to 'fully' convert with a dormer on one end. We have been advised that it won't be much cheaper than doing the whole thing from scratch though.0

It may be that the conversion isn't a full one - ie no supporting steels have been installed - you'd need to check this out. If they aren't there, then I would imagine the price isn't going to be significantly less than starting from scratch0
