You may want to watch this review first before you buy the Bosch detector:

You may want to consider Zircon and Stanley.

  • Many thanks for that .Not the best review was it! Can anyone recomend a good metal(pipe) and livewire detector - not so interested in stud detection but would like it to detect up to 50mm depth - budget up to £60.

    many thanks, neil

The Screwfix product ( approx £13) seems reliable for wires and other metal detection but I have had some confusing bleeps when searching for studs.
    Forgotten but not gone.

I've got a Bosch "DMF10 Zoom" cable detector, which cost about £70. I've tried using it for tracing the course of a cable in a hollow wall, but it wasn't very effective. It seemed to indicate that almost every part of the wall contained something metallic - partly because the wall also contains pipes and steel pillars.

In a less crowded wall it might be more effective.

I'm interested in obtaining one of these.

Myser - is there a specific Stanley or Zircon model that you prefer?

I was looking at this stanley model but again it gets varying reviews and doesn't seem to be very good at finding cables:

  • looking at the reviews the bosch seems a non starter. zircon i520 reviews seem better, has anyone had experience of using one ? The house we have just bought has needs a re-wire (fuseboard at the moment) and i dont really want to drill through a live wire when DIY,ing.

    many thanks, neil
