minature freeview recorder - is this one any good?

Morning Techie-Minded People,
am looking for something to record tv progs (MUST be able to record the subtitles) to store on external hard drive and eventually move to DVD to take to relatives abroad. Is this any good? And if not, any recommendations?

Also, current tv has freeview built-in - will that cause any conflicts?

To an extent, it's a compromise compared to a "proper" Freeview recorder, but there's nothing particularly bad about it.

One minor downside: It's SCART based, which will eventually become obsolete, though not for a while, probably.

It will be cheaper in the long run to get a hard disk for it from the start - big SD cards are still quite expensive, and you'll get a lot of disk space on hard disk for the same money.

Possible conflicts? If you're in a weak Freeview signal area, having it and the TV's tuner in series might degrade the signal (but probably won't).

Hi.

I've got one of these wired up in the spare room. It works okay, only paid £18 for it on ebay.

The downside is that you really need a self powered external drive, I found that using usb sticks often resulted in corrupted recordings and was different for different makes of USB stick - no problems with a powered drive.

Have also found that in weak signal areas the tuner is less sensitive than other freeview tuners.

It does what it says on the tin - video fies are stored in a .TS format which can easily be converted using free converters on the web should you wish to keep something.

I had experience(not home use but work related) of a similar item to that and they were utter !!!!, so many were returned(some were faulty but rest were still working)
