Legal expenses insurance

I read an article by Martin MSE that it was often better to buy standalone legal expense cover than include it on my car or home insurance. But despite several attempts on Google etc. I cannot find any companies that do it unless you are taking out their insurance. There is a forum that mentions a company in Ipswich called Best Advice UK, but when you go into it you have to have a policy for home and car which seems just as expensive. Plus they are not an insurance company.
Does anyone have this type of insurance or know where I can get some quotes. Thanks.

Nothing any good is free, these must be just a claim management organisation, which we are all being warned against.

  • When you are invited to "purchase" motor legal expenses cover as an "add on" to your motor policy - how much do you think the provider of the core product pays for the cover provided by the legal expenses insurer - answer - nowt !

Legal Expenses cover is often charged out at circa £25pa and this full amount is profit for the motor insurer.

The legal expenses provider is in effect purchasing the names and addresses of persons involved in accidents in advance

So locating a stand alone provider for free is just the same, when you are "buying" a legal cover your not actually buying the product, its provided foc and the markup of whatever fee is charged is 100% to the motor insurer - who often make more profit in selling the add on than they do from the core motor product

I buy in for free and sell out at the max I can charge

There is more to a legal expenses add-on than just pursuing a TP in the event of a non fault claim. The free one you have linked to seems to be an after the event insurance - related to non fault accidents.

Motor Legal Expenses can also provide assistance in defending prosecutions and other motor related disputes.

Back to the OP, sorry don't know.

I have mine via an insurance broker and it covers motor, home, tax investigations, defence against motoring prosecutions, consumer and employee affairs etc.
So you could try an insurance broker for a composite famile legal cover policy.

    Check what you are buying!

Most £20 add on legal expenses are actually just for "uninsured loss recovery", and not giving you any lawyers to defend you when prosecuted etc!

If you are a member of a union check whether you are covered already. Unions will cover you for this so you may already be paying for it in your membership fee. A quick google revealed UNISON members have this cover automatically.

Contacted Composite Legal to-day and they say they cannot sell direct, but I could purchase the policy through 2 of their brokers. Contacted these in turn and both said they did not do it!! Can you please advise where you purchased your policy ? PM if you wish. thankyou.

E-mailed Composite Legal again and received the reply shown below.. I am getting nowhere with this, as nobody seems to want to sell a combined policy. So if you can help further, much appreciated.
    'Dear Sir,
The brokers listed do sell our policy, however it may be that it is combined with a household insurance policy (as most such policies are). Unless you are taking it with a household policy it may be difficult to take it out as a standalone product. '
