Independent Gas Transporter?

I tried to find out who the gas supplier was at a house I might be renting and they coulden't tell me, all they could tell me is it was an Independent Gas Transporter, what's one of those?

And would it have anything to do with the fact our potential landlord is a gas safe certified engineer? Probably not but thought I'd ask anyway.

And all I've found out is that getting gas from an Independent Gas Transporter can be considerably more expensive.

It will cost you up to £42 a year more but British Gas do not charge that and some other companies don't charge it. It's not easy to check as some tariffs with some companies charge it and some don't. You need to ring the company you are thinking of switching to and ask.

So what is an Independent Gas Transporter then? Do they sell the gas to a company say British Gas but at a higher price? So that's why it costs more?

    Thanks for your post.

Gas is transported by National Grid (formerly Transco). The gas itself may be owned and sold by someone else.

IGT's are a way for the developer of your property to get gas installed very cheap. Instead of the developer paying out hundreds of pounds upfront they might only charge an amount in the 10's of pounds per property but it costs the customer £42 more per year or have a restricted selection of tariffs. Not easy to explain. Transco does most of the transporting of gas and the last bit is transported by an IGT instead. A web search might answer your question better than I can explain it.

If you buy from British Gas the price will be the same whether you are on an IGT or not.
