Travelling from Leeds(ish) to Shannon, ireland

Hi my OH and I are planning to go to a wedding at the end of July 2012. We live just near Leeds (about 15 miles) away and we hoping to go out on fri 27th July, returning on Sunday 29th July. The wedding is on sat 28th just outside Shannon. We have looked into flights and also the ferry and both seem incredibly expensive. I'm talking £500+ for the two of us.

This is so much more than I was expecting when we accepted the invitation. Does anyone do this kind of journey regularly, with work etc? Which airlines etc do you go through? Am I better waiting until nearer the time or will prices just keep going up?

Thanks in advance for any guidance anyone can offer :j

You can get combined train and ferry tickets for 34 pounds each way Leeds to Dublin. Details of this and onward Irish travel here

I'm guessing that this journey could take a long time though, but hey you'll arrive
just in time for the Christening.
  • Wait til about 6-8 weeks before and they should drop to a tenner. If you look now for Feb the same rule applies....even tho it will be mid summer.

Obviously not as fast as a plane but the OP has mentioned looking into ferries, so they are prepared to spend a few hours travelling (if the price is right).

Hopefully they would arrive before the Christening, unless this is a last minute shotgun wedding.

Remember this is the start of the school holidays, flights are likely to fill early, I would book sooner rather than later and I would certainly chose Aer Lingus, even if it is their 'Regional' offshoot that operates to Shannon rather than Ryanair, and there are direct trains from Leeds to Manchester Airport as well!
