House Alarm keeps sounding, even when unarmed

We've had an alarm system on the house since we moved in. When we moved in 10 years ago, it was 'deactivated' so we called the alarm company to reactivate it.

Since then we've had the odd false alarm when it randomly sounds for no apparent reason. When the code is entered, it indicates that "Tamper" was the reason for alarm.

However, the other night, it sounded 8 times. Waking up all our neighbours in the process. I entered the code and each time it had a tamper light on as reason for alarm.

I'm stuck as to what is causing this - could it be a loosely fitted alarm box on the outside, or rodents nibbling/upsetting damaged cables? I'm at a loss as to what this could be and would appreciate your advice before I call the alarm company again. It's not under warranty btw :o

Thanks in advance :D

The tamper fault can be caused by a few things.
Basically the tamper circuit is a closed loop that goes through each cable on the system to each device. In some devices, such as a magnetic door contact the wires are just looped together, in other devices such as a movement sensor there is a switch to detect when the device is opened or "tampered" with.
On some control boxes the individual zones have a tamper circuit, on others there is just one tamper circuit with the wiring connected to form a series loop around the system. Any high resistance reading anywhere on the circuit will trigger a "tamper" alarm, Because it seems to be of an intermittent nature, unless you have a test meter and a little knowledge of basic circuits you might struggle to locate it.
That said if there is just one tamper circuit on the panel it is an easy task to link it in the panel as a temporary measure until the fault can be found. This does however leave you system open to interference without detection.
