Replacing Quicken Personal Finance

Hi and thanks for reading my query. I've been using Quicken Personal since 1998 and have been addicted to it but just before Xmas my PC died and my old software is no longer compatible. I'm looking for a replacement. Quicken was always so simple to use but the replacements seem to have been written for people who work in finance and not people that want to manage their personal finances.

So far I've downloaded free trials of Home Accountz and Home Accounts and looked at gnucash. All have had me running in the opposite direction with each just setting up individual bank accounts driving me bananas - seems that each payee is classified as an account. Neither allow me to put in pensions funds.

I just want something simple that automatically adds in regular transactions, allows me to see what money is/isn't in my bank accounts. Basically I'd love to have Quicken 2012. But as that's unlikely I'd appreciate any suggestions.

My life isn't about understanding spreadsheets but it it about knowing my available money.

Thanks

I stopped using Quicken when they got rid of the QIF import feature, saying it was unreliable - news to me! More likely because they were trying to get banks to license their new file format (OSX is it? something like that)

So I now use Moneydance. Have you tried it?

I've not heard of moneydance, I will check it out, is it very similar to Quicken?

One thing I've noticed with the various download options is that they only let you have one cheque bank account, I have three. Are there any that allow multiple accounts. (or could be that it's not clear how to enter a 2nd and 3rd)
  • Old versions of Quicken that may be more up to date than your version are available as free downloads from Intuit.

    http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/install--register--and-convert/using-an-intermediate-version-to-convert-older-versions-of-quicken/GEN82211.html

The downside is that they are USA versions, but better than nothing if you are stuck.

Thanks will definitely look into that - can pretend dollars are pounds
  • HI,

You can buy the last Version of UK Quicken , 2004 on Ebay. Prices vary from £19.99 to £24.99.

It comes with instructions for installation under XP, Vista or Windows 7.

I bought o a copy and it works fine.

Just install and then restore your old files into it and you should be OK.

Windows 7 has a compatibility feature so if you have your old disk and passwords you can also reinstall on a new system.

    Good luck

Thanks - I still have all the old disks and tried to install yesterday but will try again and look for the compatibility on Win 7
  • Hi,

I managed to load Quicken 2000 on Win 7 by fiddling a bit.

The auto run file on the CD will not work so load the CD and when it fails open Windows (not Internet) Explorer and expand the CD drive.

Right click on the Install.exe file and choose "Run as Administrator"

Follow the prompts and type in the product key etc.

You may find that some of the graphics play up a bit but it worked as it did for XP.

If you backed up on removable media then restore using the File menu.
If you didn't then start from scratch.

I have used Quicken since the mid 90's and currently running Quicken 4. I have a Mac and boot into Windows purely to use Quicken. Over the last few years I have tried many different account programs but nothing touches it.

Happy to hear any suggestions but chances are I've tried it...
  • I totally agree with above post.

Have tried numerous offering just in case Quicken didn't work.

Am now in my 17th year of using Quicken.
