Broken PS3 do we have consumer rights?

Hi, DS1 bought a PS3 April 2008 costing £299 (his own money)
Within 13 months it had broken down and, because it was outside the 1yr waranty period, Toysrus told us that we had to deal with Sony directly.
Sony sent a refurb to replace the broken PS3 free of charge.
Today DS1 turned on the PS3 and it wouldn't start.. just a flashing red light.
I phoned Sony and they are offering to replace the broken PS3 with an identical refurb, 3 months waranty for £110.
I simply feel that something so, so expensive should be made to last longer than the few years.
Do we have any rights?
(The PS3 has been well looked after)
