Amitriptyline and Fibromyalgia

Hi,

Could anyone tell me why Amitriptyline is prescribed to help with Fibromyalgia?

I have been taking 10mg each evening for about 8 weeks now and the only thing I've noticed is a very dry mouth!

Could someone tell me what exactly it's meant to help alleviate regarding Fibromyalgia.

Also, I obviously have been started off on the lowest amount. What is the average amount that people take. And does the dry mouth eventually go once the drug is in your system because I don't think I could stand it if it happened all the time (it seems to come and go at the minute). Should I keep taking the drug in the hope that it eventually helps certain symptoms.

I was also reccomended to take Pregablin but the doctor hasn't given me it yet. I don't know why, but since I have a phobia of vomiting I'd rather put off taken tablets for as long as possible as I find pills sometimes hard to take - and once I feel like I'm going to choke/vomit, it puts me off from taking them again.

Amitriptyline's a pain-killer as well as an anti-depressant, it's been found to be very effective for some types of chronic pain (neuropathic pain, for example). It can take quite some time to work, a month, or even two (a neurologist and my GPs say).

People normally get used to the dry mouth etc. and just stop noticing it but it does affect some more than others.

Ask your doctor about all this.

In the cases of Fibromyalgia it is used as for relaxation. 10mg is the lowest dose you can have and usually fir Fibro you go up to 30mg max in stages.

I took it for Chronic pain and to act as neurotransmitter blocker and was on 150mg. It worked in a fashion as I was out of it all day and night, really on planet zog.

The dose you are on is low as I said as Fibro is on the lower end of the scale of pain compared to other conditions that followed a shock injury. The dry mouth is a side effect and should get better after a while. If not see your Doctor.
  • its not really the thing on mse to discuss medication in any detail, such issues are best discussed with either a gp or consultant as we are all different and react in different ways to medication,on that basis perhaps this thread could be locked?
