Swimming Costume for the "larger Lady"

Comments

  • You beat me to it on this post - I was going to ask if any larger ladies could comment on a one piece costume vs a tankini. I am the same size as you Cookiee and carry a lot of weight on my tummy. I have always found swimwear to run a bit small so wondered about a maternity swimsuit or tankini to have the extra belly room ( but don`t want the pants falling off in the water lol)

Good luck with your weight loss. I need to lose 6 stone but would be happy with 4 stone for now. What sort of eating plan are you planning to follow? I am diabetic so going to have a shot at the low GI/GLway of eating.

You don't have to be able to swim in order to do aqua-fit, aqua-aerobics, whatever they call it where you're planning to go. I go 3 x week to LA Fitness in Thorpe Bay where they have a pool. As long as you're able to stand up in the water you can do it. I can jump around for 45 mins in water whereas I couldn't manage even 5 mins out of the water. Water provides resistance and at the same time provides support.

Have a look at Amplebosom, where they specialise in all things for larger ladies. http://www.amplebosom.com/swimwear.php

MargaretClare's right, Cookiee, you don't need to be able to swim. At Winchester we did our Aquafit in the kiddies' pool. My mum used to go as well (until she reached her target weight) and not only is she unable to swim but she's also very nervous in water, having lost an uncle in a tragic swimming accident when she was a child.

You'll be fine, and hopefully have some fun as well. My friend and I used to have a real laugh at Aquafit about how loopy we looked jigging about in the baby pool! :D

Hi Slinky :D I am going on a low cal diet and cutting out a lot of rubbish. I kept a food diary for 1 month to see what rubbish I was eating and spoke to a health nurse who advised what to swap and drop.

It is going to be hard but I am hoping that with the support of lovely people on this thread and some will power (bought it at the sales :rotfl:) I will make 2012 a better year :T

I was bigger than you when I started swimming and dieting in Jan this year - I was 24/26. I'm now 16/18 after losing nearly five stone. When people ask me how I've done it, i say 'eat less; move around more'.

I swear by Zoggs swimming costumes - I bought my two from House of Fraser but I notice that the Zoggs website have some 1/2 price in the sale:

I quite like that you can play a little video and see the cossie all the way round. Word of warning - don't get a legsuit - you can get into them but you sure as hell can't get out of them easily after your swim!

Now I'm slimmer, I go to the gym now as well.

Still another 2 stone to lose but I'll get there.

I went into Bedford today to be nosy and look at getting a heart rate monitor in the sales. I walked into sports direct and they had a sale on their swimming costumes. Ooo I thought and had a look through. I could not see the ones on the top hook and went to ask the sales assistant if she could grab a hook so I can have a look at them (they were £30 now £7). She looked me up and down and said really rudly "sorry we dont sell to fat people"

OMG!! Now I am not a shy person (far from it) but I was stuck to the floor. No words came out of my mouth and she gave a smirk and walked off. I regained my composure and hot footed it out of there. There was a lot of people looking at me and I was so embarressed!

I am kicking myself now as I have a huge list of comebacks I wish I had said. Grrr ...

Anyway my search goes on ...
  • I thought a tankini top would be more suitable, but it just kept riding up so I gave up and got a one piece.

Just about to check out some of the links on this thread. Been searching for a Fantasie one piece in plain black for most of the day, but the cheapest I can find is £49!

    Good luck, OP!
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

There's no way I'd have taken that. I'd have been fizzing!

What a biatch! I'm angry for you.

I had an M & S Miracle/Magic/Shaper job (can't remember what it was called, lol) and it did the job but it did seem very tight for the size iyswim.

Thats such a nasty thing to say :(

People can be so horrible. I think anyone who wants to become more active should be encouraged and you'd think someone who works in a sports shop would know that. If ou can be bothered ring the manager next week & complain. Good luck with your weight loss :)
