Look at a Skoda Superb, saloon, or estate. I would say a Octavia but with 2 11 year olds that you want to keep for 5 years they will apreaciate the rear leg room of the superb, even if they don't like the badge, it would be loaded with toys compared with an Audi. The rear seats fold in all Skodas I have looked at.

    Good Morning folks

    Thanks for your replies.

Yes, a hatchback would probably be my choice, but the problem is that all my mates keep on teasing me saying that a hatchback is a 'ladies' car!!!

    Would you agree with that?

    No.
I haven't bought a saloon since they first made hatchbacks.
    What's more important though.
Buying a family car, or impressing your mates?

    Hi Folks

I live in the UK and thinking of buying a new or used car. I don't know much about cars, so apart from reading car reviews on websites such as What Car, Top Gear, Parkers, The AA, Auto Trader and Auto Express, can you suggest other things that I can do in order to decide the 'perfect' car for me?

By the way, what is the best month(s) of the year in which to buy a new/used car?

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you already know your stuff as you told us your researching with the above. My advise for what it's worth is looking into the best finance for yourself, when you do decide on the manufacture play off two of the dealers on price.

Best time to buy most large products such as cars, kitchens ect is DECEMBER as not many people buy these products at xmas and retailers still have targets to reach. It makes me laugh when people think it's the January sales.

A generalisation and not necessarily the case with all cars. I bought a Nissan Primera 2.0LX back in 1996 which was an ex Barclays Bank car. It was 2.5 years old and had done 50000 miles but the interior was spotless. I wasn't worried about the mileage as I only did 5000 a year back then so I knew my mileage would allow the yearly average to drop.

It drove superbly, never broke down and only needed wear and tear items replacing during my ownership. I sold it six years later with 78000 on the clock.

A proper rep wagon is pushing 120k after that amount of time tbh :D

    Good Morning

Many thanks indeed for your replies. I think I may look at buying a saloon with folding back seats.

Also, both my wife and I are quite small in height, and at the moment we have a fiesta mark 4, which we can handle 'ok'. I am thinking that if I buy a large sized car such as an Audi A4, then it may be difficult to handle i.e. parking and judging distance etc. Do you think that would be the case?

    Thanks

The issue with saloon is not the boot, its the opening to the boot. As for a hatchback a girls car? I really don't know where your mates get that from.

What about a Ford Mondeo? Hatchback, but still a big car.
