When is a good time to leave BT before your contract ends

I recently found out that my Bt contract ends in June 2012. Can I inform them in March or April that I know longer wish to use their services without them charging me a leaving charge or trying to take my number. Thank you.

Your contract doesn't 'end', it becomes a rolling contract, the required notice is then I think 15 days.
What ends is your minimum term-unless you are on an auto-renewing contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Just come off the phone with BT Customer services who told me that they do not do auto renewing any more , I noticed the discount hadn't been applied to my bill so called to find out why.
Could've sworn I had a letter in September saying if I didn't reply I'd be renewing for another 12 months, worked out good for me as I am now free to move.
I have a print off of a live chat with BT confirming I'm not in any contract too - just in case as I'm well aware how awful BT are and I believe they will try and say I'm tied in until Sept 2012 when they find out I'm leaving them.0 -
Auto-renewing is being phased out after pressure from the regulators. No free lunch, and no free laptop

It isn't a 'rolling' contract either. The contract exists or it doesn't - it doesn't roll - the difference is that the minimum term can re-start if certain options are selected (but will be resolved as customers won't be locked in, the 'free' (actually inclusive) weeknight calls will similarly end.0
