Opinions please

Hi,

Our winter electric bill is looking like £250 - £280 for the 3 months. Is this resonable? Heating is gas CH. We have 3 bed semi. Dishwasher/tumble dryer/Washing machine/fridge/freezer/leccy cooker. 2 adults 2 children.

Looking at the usage its about 20 units a day.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

    Hi,
Looking at the usage its about 20 units a day.

Well that's over twice the "average" electric consumption for a gas heated house.

However "why" can't be answered without you saying how much electric cooking, how much tumbledrying in particular, but also washing and dishwashing, not forgetting "gadge" which you didn't even mention.
  • gadge? we, we dont even smoke rollups?

    cooking about 1 hour
2 poss 3 tumble drying hours as have 1 year old so lots of clothes
    1 or 2 dishwasher a day, ussually 1
1 load of washing machine a day
    no additional electric heating

    didnt think we're OTT?
  • I've just had my bill from Eon and it was, after a discount of 15%, £272.
£111 for electricity and £161 for gas heating and hot water.

However I used 2000 kWh of gas less this time than last year because of the warmer weather.

That is for 2 people with the heating on all day from 9 am till 11 pm

It's high usage - the tumble dryer is likely to be the main culprit. Suggest you dry as much as you can on the radiators, clothes horse etc...
  • I have just done a meter read over last 3 days, with people in house 24/7, PC's,laptops, dishwasher, electric oven, tumbledryer, plasma tv, LCD tv and a portable one, xmas lights and lamps on, plus a 2kw fan heater used in one bedroom by a very nesh lodger, we appear to have used £9.30 or 83kwh, which equates to approx £93 over a month if usage stays the same, but we are a power hungry household and our DD payments reflect this. Between 3 adults we pay £150 pm DD for dual fuel, so £25 each for gas and electric respectively. And we rarely go out, so our entertainment so to speak is covered by those figs. I would agree that the tumble dryer is a huge power guzzler, but on the flip side, drying on radiators and clothes horses would contribute to damp/condensation, not to mention taking an age to dry in some cases, the dryer doesn't appear to be such an evil on balance. You just need to use it wisely, always make sure it is reasonably full, never dry a couple of items at a time.

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Perhaps you could invest in a tumble dryer see how it performs.

A tumble drier on 3 hours a day is going to cost around £18pm. if it's using around 2kW.
If your annual consumption is 20 units per day, that's 7,300kWh pa-about twice the national average for a property with gas CH and DHW.
An electric cooker is about 3 times more expensive to run than a gas cooker.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Bear in mind it can go down to around £47 for the quater during summer

so tumble dryers at peak now.
