You won't be able to take the policy over I'm afraid. Depending on how long it has to run and what refund he'd be entitled to, you could just let it run and in the mean time taking out your own policy then he wouldn't have to pay a cancellation fee (I found that once, had 2 months left on insurance so no refund due but a cancellation fee of £75 so I let it run). You will need to be the official keeper of the vehicle which means having the v5 in your name. I'd recommend you ask him to bring the entire document along and fill it in together and you send off the relevant bit to dvla, that way you know it has been done. Most insurance companies expect you to be the official keeper in order to get insurance cover and you don't want him telling you he's done it when actually he hasn't. Ownership and official keeper are two seperate things so if I were in your position I'd want something written down saying ownership has transferred, sold as seen for £1 or something like that.
