Buying lots of household goods for new place

Options
Hello everyone,

I'm a recent FTB and have exchanged on a place due to complete on 13th January. The current occupants are taking EVERYTHING with them - all white goods, furniture, etc...

So, I need quite a few bits and pieces. I have considered eBay and similar. I have the money reserved to spend on some goods, and see it as an investment, e.g. a brand new, decent Fridge will last 10 years, or whatever.

I plan to stay at my new place for at least 5 years, so not really a short stay.

What I need is:

Fridge Freezer - did want a huge american one, but think I will go for standard, cheaper one.

Washer Dryer - I think I have space for separate, but at a later date I may look at a dish washer so don't want to take up all the room.

Cooker - a gas one.

I think that's the main stuff for the kitchen. One other thing is, I plan in about 6 months to rent the second room out, so need to bear that in mind too.

Any tips on where to buy, how to negotiate, etc... Never bought any of these items before. As an example something suggested John Lewis as they are expensive, but the service is great, the aftercare is good, and the difference in price with competitors isn't that huge.

Keep an eye on here for deals:

Some of the items may have marks/scratches as they have been returned/ex-display. I think most items come with a 12 month warranty.

  • For things like sofas etc try freecycle, I had to get loads of things when i bought my house. I got a 'temporary' sofa from freecycle, its still there! :embarasse

And when i do decide to get rid of the ugly coloured sofa it will be going back to freecycle, still plenty ugly years left in it yet (hope its not listening)

Otherwise Comet et al. will price match, its might just be a case of comparing the different places...
