Disclosing Claims on a Car Insurance Policy

The insurance companies obviously have some data which means if you have a minor injury as a passenger in a bus, coach, taxi, private motorcar or private motor bike in the last 5 years you are more likely to have another injury, which is why it's relevant and you have to declare it.
Well The Road Traffic Act defines a motor vehicle as - "a mechanically propelled vehicle intended or adapted for use on roads" and gives other definitions for a motor car, motor bike etc.
I don't see how though as in all the Insurance companies I've ever worked for there is no way of listing a passenger only injury claim? They only want to know about accidents where you were driving, theft, malicious damage, storm/flood etc. I've never (even when quoting people) asked if they have been third parties to claims and received an injury payout?0 -
No.
You have to disclose all claims/losses irrespective of whether or not you claimed off your own policy(s).
Seriously??....
An insurer is no more interested in this type of claim as they are in a subsidence claim on your house policy, or if you were knocked over by a car and claimed for that.
You should delcare any claims on your policy regardless of whos claiming, OR any incidents in which you were driving regardless of if the policy was yours (eg named driver or company vehicle etc).0 -

Have you read the OP?0 -
Thanks for all the responses folks! Still a little confused over it all given I seem to have sparked a debate!
Have a tendancy to side with twocoats and adamc. I wasn't driving, it wasn't my car and the claim is not on my insurance policy nor one I am named on. I'd assume if Joe Public were to disclose this sort of claim to potential insurers, then they would to disclose all accidents they've had in life?!0 -
So what's next?
Have you ever seen an accident, or heard about one down the pub?0 -

As you have disclosed this incident to the insurer (mentioned in your OP), be aware that they may have recorded this on your record, (and shared the info with other insurers).0 -

I was taking the p**s as I know a few people who have had accidents in taxis and buses, and have received compensation from the taxi/bus company. They also drive cars/motorbikes and as far as I'm aware never put this down on their insurance.
There is no reason to as how can the fact that you broke my glasses on a <insert mode of transport you were a passenger in> in the center of the city when the <insert mode of transport you were a passenger in> had to brake sharply be linked to your ability to drive?I'm not cynical I'm realistic

However if you explained the issue like you did in your first post then that would be why you were declined.
If Quentin is right you may have problems later on with an insurer threatening to cancel your insurance as the person doing the declined quote could have ticked some random box. Though as long as you have paperwork to prove your claim is not on your insurance and is about you as a passenger, and you reply promply to any letters from your own insurer regarding this issue sending correspondence by recorded/registered delivery you should be able to sort it out.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
