Sometimes you spot something which just looks cool. This is one of them - I can't justify calling it MoneySaving, but I suspect other gadget lovers will like it anyway. I'm not actually suggesting you buy them (i haven't) but just take a peek and go "oooh" like I did!

It's rechargeable batteries you plug into the USB port on your compter to charge! Take a look USB rechargeable batteries

As a result of the USB part it reduces the capacity to about half that of the highest current nimh rechargeables, I think about 1300mAh. Power hungry gadgets will last half the time.

A suggestion from another place is to carry normal AA nimh (2500mAh) and a USB charger. Cheaper too (sorry). Perhaps like this.

    Cheers

  • I wanted to buy these for my hubby for christmas but spending so much time on here has changed my spending habits so much I couldn't bring myself to part with the cash. Pre MSE I wouldn't have hesitated. :o No doubt they will develop them to be more efficient soon.
  • I like them! But not the price!! Anyone got a code or can you use quidco with them?

    Hi Martin:

It's a very good idea - very convenient.

I don't know if you've ever noticed, but Ni-mh batteries don't have a long 'shelf life' when you have charged them, i.e. they lose their power quickly.

There's a new type of rechargeable battery that you can recharge in any standard charger called the Hybrio.

    http://www.batterylogic.co.uk/hybrio.htm

You can use it straight out of the pack, and keeps its charge much, much longer than standard Ni-mh batteries. In fact, it has 'keeping' qualities much more similar to the alkaline.

It even appears to have been endorsed by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature.

I felt this was worth mentioning - might be handy to keep a few of these around charged up!

    Cheers

That hybrio battery looks very interesting - anyone used them? Do they really keep their power for as long as stated? That's one of the worst aspects of conventional rechargables, that they can't retain power if left around - so i think i might get some of this hybrio for myself :D

I think hybrio are the same technology as sanyo eneloop.

Here is a link to real life testing of the discharge rates.

i.e. Yes they do work. But the capacities are slightly lower about 2100mAh compared with 2500+mAh.

If you want something similar then on ebay there is a brand of battery called vapextech, "instant" or "new technology". I've bought 8 and so far so good. I trust the brand as I have many of the other high capacity versions and they independantly test out OK.

    Cheers

  • I've got some of these already and use them with my xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. I'd recommend them as, overall the're cheaper than standard AA batteries plus you'll be doing your bit for the environment.
