This is the line usually spouted out by people who have no, or few, qualifications.

:rotfl: I have 14 A*-B grade GCSEs, 4 A and B grade A levels (including pure and applied maths), an OU degree and several post grad professional qualifications.

Having helped various friends' children and cousins through their GCSEs in the past 5 years it's quite clear to me how much easier they are now (compared with 18-20 years ago). You can be barely literate and get a C in English now.

  • Apart from a local college, is there anywhere else that people could recommend looking for doing a GCSE again?

Or by those who are overqualified in their field but have little real-life experience.

Okay, sunshine!! Add 20 years continuous work experience in many areas, 1 husband and 1 child and you've got a pretty rounded 36 year old :D.

Wanna scrape the barrel for anything else?

    • The above essential criteria precluded equivalents thus barring a candidate from a job that was a salary grade lower than a comparable ICT (computer) job in another post-primary school. The difference between the two schools being that the “GCSE or equivalent” was a community school and the other a grammar.
    • As for O levels being better or not; its a moot point, for i watched the QI series a few months back and due to normalisation of the IQ scale there was a suggestion that all persons of a certain age would be labelled as learning impaired. I for one think if the older generation did not think exams were getting easier then the younger generation would be content to live in caves still QED they are not and science progresses.

Community centres and libraries are sometimes used by colleges or local councils as accessible places for English/Maths courses - in my area, most are free.

There are also 'distance learning' providers, where you learn in your own home and often at your own pace. I have no experience of these (apart from the OU, which do not offer GCSEs as far as I know).
  • I'm sure there eventually if you keep trying those who will accept the qualifications you do have if you keep on trying, however baring that in mind GCSEs?O levels are like the cutoff point at HR, you could rename your qualifications to the GCSE equivalent on your CV. That might help next time.

It's not age discrimination because employers always accept my O level English and Maths as equivalents.
If those are GCE O Levels, then they certainly should accept them. O Levels from the 1970's were set to a higher standard than A Levels today.

    Very true.

The much trumpeted 'pass rates' are a lie. Either every child in the country has suddenly become a towering genius, or the government is fiddling the figures.

    Which could it possibly be?

  • Given you get a C just for turning up and being able to write your name on the paper, is this really an issue?

    that's a massive lie

I turned up wrote my name did the whole paper I got a D (English)

I did get a B in maths though
