  • O levels or CSE grade 1 are seen as equivilent to GCSEs - I am 'of a certain age' with O levels :).

My son left school and went onto college for 2 years to do further education. After the 2 years where he gained the higest qualifications on the course, he went on to do an apprenticeship and was taken on in the job. He mentioned to another college friend who also gained the same high qualifications about the apprenticeship. He went along for an interview but was turned down as he did not have a grade C or above in English or Maths. Seems no matter what you achieve later on, you need a C or above in English and Maths.

i have never had a problem using my o levels and cses rather than gcses, so i'm not sure why you think it's ageist.
Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

If you have a degree and postgrad qualification it would be unlikely that you didnt have 5 gcses! Its not exactly hard to get 5 of them at A*-C. Most unis require them for entry anyway. And if you are older then they would accept O levels. So I dont see the problem.
O-levels are accepted as equivalent, yes.

But some people excel in certain artistic subjects and yet really struggle with maths, and vice versa, so a degree and postgrad qualification isn't necessarily an indication that someone will have both Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above.
  • O Levels are better than GCSEs.

    No it wouldn't.

Plenty of people go into HE via the BTEC First/BTEC National route as the OP has done.
  • Given you get a C just for turning up and being able to write your name on the paper, is this really an issue?
Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.
Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

    Me too.

CSE's weren't available at my school - so it was O'Levels or nothing.

  • I'm currently doing a degree with the OU, but when that is done I'm going to be having to go back and do my English Language GCSE because I got D. I did get a C for Literature though, but that isn't accepted.

This is the line usually spouted out by people who have no, or few, qualifications.
