Does rent date have to co-incide with date you move in?

Hello all

I am due to move to another rented property mid Jan. In my current property (and last one too) the rent leaves my account each month on the date that I moved in (e.g 23rd of the month).

I get paid on the 21st of the month, and have originally asked to move in on that date and would therefore pay rent on 21st of each month. However property is available any time in Jan if I want to move earlier.

I have chance of having free removals the week before on 14th as my flatmate is being relocated elsewhere in country and the removals company have offered to include my stuff in the quote (all ok'd by her company). Removals would be great for me cos I live on 4th floor flat with no lift! :rotfl:

But I really don't want to have to use my overdraft for a week every month to pay my rent! And have no money elsewhere at moment to cover it for a month.

So could I ask to move in on 14th, but have rent payment taken on 21st? the rental period would still be monthly from 14th.

I will ring the LL later to ask but wanted to see what people thought of this first.

Cheers

I don't see why not, although they will almost certainly want the extra week's rent paid along with the first month's rent, so be sure to budget for this one off expense.
  • There is no reason why you can't pay your rent on the date you quoted. If you move in before the rent-due date then it makes more sense for the first month's rent to be higher to account for having moved in a week or so earlier.

Everything and anything can be agreed if both parties want it.
  • Cheers both.

I am happy to pay the extra week's rent but just wasn't sure whether is was the 'done' thing to consider asking it! I'll update you with how I get on later

I like to get rent from my tenants on the 1st of the month, regardless of when they move it. Depending on when in the month it is I adjust the first months payment.

Just be aware when you leave that you have to give notice that ends on the contractual end date, which won't be your rent date.

It all depends on how flexible the LL is.
  • Nothing wrong with asking, worst they can do is say no. You don't ask, you don't get!
I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.
  • :j landlord happy for me to move in on 14th, and pay rent 21st of month, just need to pay the extra week on top :D

Just make sure what the LL means by
and pay rent 21st of month
    You said earlier
the rent leaves my account each month on the date that I moved in
in most cases the LL expects to receive the rent on the agreed date. If it takes 3 days to get from your bank to his, you will be constantly paying late.
