  • Glad to hear you are "in the zone" for some serious debt busting. Loving your toilet roll feedback, it is the one thing that I loathe to spend money on but is such a necessity lol!

We kept chucks in the past and they are great characters, really lovely little pets to have with great personalities. We had an orpington (which was rubbish for egg production by the way), but she would parade round the garden with the dogs - I am sure she thought she was one of them :o

Aww - thank you all for the support. I would love to have hens but we have no garden. :-( The cat did not mind - we did take him out for walks in his harness (he was better than many a dog I have seen - no pulling) but he was always happy to go home after his rounds.

Itsadogslife - that hen is gorgeous! Can you just sit them on your lap and cuddle them? I used to take care of a flock of pigeons when I was wee but only one would let me touch him. It would be so nice to have a productive pet for once. We had a mouse in the flat two years ago and I found her eating from the cat's bowl while the cat was watching her curiously. I think he might have thought that she is just a tiny guinea pig and he was not allowed to attack them when they were running about.

As for slugs, HappyNow, I used to live in a slug infested house (that's why I am used to them - picked up hundreds off the kitchen floor) and have to confess that I attracted birds to the garden to sort the problem out... I am quite selfish :-(

I will be phoning PFSS today so fingers crossed.

Best wishes with the PFSS. My MIL got a one eyed cat of them and is doing well. Quite a character. I'm still keen to foster too once more settled. Cheers

That's a great photo Itsa, thanks. They look like real pals :). When we got our chickens I was worried that our three cats would chase them, but they never bothered. Our last hen died last year and I would like to get some more, but there are too many foxes round here at the moment. We've always had them completely free-range during the daytimes and it's only the last couple of years we've had a fox problem. I daresay natural balance (or local farmers!) will reduce the fox numbers eventually and we will get more then. Or we could build a secure pen I suppose, but we could buy a lot of eggs for the cost of that.

Yes, chickens seem quite happy to be cuddled! I've got a great photo of Little Miss Happy aged about 10 sat on the sofa watching a film with a hen on her knee. I took a quick photo but then sent the hen outside because they're very difficult to house-train and do really messy poos!! If ever you move to a house with a garden I would definitely recommend chickens. Unless you're a keen gardener that is - they do scrat the plants up then dust-bathe in the hole that's left.

Good luck with the PFSS Boomfloom, let us know what they say :)

I had a one-eyed cat a few years ago JJ . It was removed by the vet after it got infected following a catfight. She managed perfectly well for years and just walked with her head turned slightly to the left to compensate. I hope your MIL's does just as well as mine did :)

  • I loved letting my hens have the run of the garden, but they kept ripping and scratting up all of the bedding plants and especially loved the sweat peas :o

We also have a slug problem. Every so often, I come downstairs and find "trails" across the carpet, it is horrible. Normally I catch the culprits just before bedtime when they come out late at night. It is because we live on an old marsh - don't know how they get in thought, little gits

It amazes me how they dig up the flowers but leave the weeds!

Anyway, just a fleeting visit to update my sig. Payday is Tuesday but all the credit card statements are in (eight :o!) so I know what I have to pay out, even if I'm not sure how we're going to eat for the next month! Grrrr to January. It's minimum payments all round, except for Capital One where I am paying real live interest of 11.9% on the balance of £3680. Last month I bravely upped its direct debit amount to £150 instead of the minimum payment of about £75. I should have maybe held back until February, but meh, it's done now and we will manage.

Full update later, I can hear Mr H moving upstairs.
