Help, car won't go into gear!
Hi
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on this before I take my car to a garage. Dont really want ripped off!!
Was out in car all day yesterday and was working fine.
Got in this morning to go to work and engine started first time as usual but when i pressed the clutch pedal it juddered all the way down. I panicked and turned off the engine.
I pressed it again still with engine off and it felt fine. Re-started car and although the clutch pedal felt normal when pressed I could not get any the gears to work! I have tried the gears with the engine on and off and no difference, they just won't engage
Any idea of what the cause could be? Its a 2001 Peugoet 307.
Thanks

If it had went into gear with the engine off I would have suggested the clutch pressure plate had collapsed but as it wont it may be something major in the gearbox, maybe the layshaft?counting down the time I got left.:beer:0

If the gears are cable operated it could be one of the cables has snapped. Look under the bonnet while someone moves the gear lever and see if you can see anything.0

Check the hydraulic fluid level, its the same one as brake fluid, top up if required, if it is the same then you have a problem with the hydraulic clutch system.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Has it ever had a clutch replacement? and was the release bearing replaced at this time?“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Either way, its not going to be cheap and if you've got a repair where the gearbox has to come off, you might as well pony up another £100 or so and have a new clutch fitted as well as it'll save £100s on the labour costs of getting it done further down the line and its a good selling point.0

Sorry its taken so long to reply, had to go to work (on the bus...boooo!!) but thanks for the replies and suggestions as to what it might be.
Strider590 - As far as I know it has never had the clutch replaced. I have owned the car for a year and a half and have the service history and receipts from 2006.
My brother in law had a look today and thinks it is the clutch that has gone. He did manage to put the car into second gear then start it but not sure if that was just brute force!!! Was hoping it wasn't going to be anything too expensive to fix but looks like I will be starting the new year a lot poorer! :-(0 -
Ok just heard from brother in law who has spoken to the mechanic he uses and he has been quoted between 350 and 550 for a new clutch! Does that sound too expensive?0

get car in gear then with the clutch pedal depressed start car if it lurches forward your clutch is finished i would suggest however that the problem is with the cables or the linkage has fell apart0

Thanks for your reply, I will try that Muscle750. If it is the clutch does the price quoted sound about right?0
