Heating needed,yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,weve just moved into a 1930s house with an ooil boiler,it gets very very hot but £330 of oil last about 6 weeks,so not financially very good!!

Ive thought about electric boilers, ground and air pumps and gas but really havent got a clue what would be the better option.

Gas is about 100 ft away in the main road.

Any thooughts greatly appreciated cos the oil will last about a week before i have to top it up,luckily weve got open fires,so i have plenty off wood from work and a shed full of coal left here by previous owner ans warmth is not an issue this wintermjust wanting to get it sorted for next one though!!!!

Thanks.

Liam

There lies your problem. Nothing wrong with your heating just turn the thermostat down a few degrees. If you don't need two pairs of socks on and a big jumper you have it on too high.

    Turn the temperature down?

I realise that insulation can be difficult in a 1930s house but sort the insulation first.

Gas will be by far the cheapest option to run, but the one-off cost of getting the supply run for 100ft will not be cheap.
Oil is more per kWh than gas, but still a lot less than electricity.
As others have said, you may just need to get some proper controls on your existing system.

With mains Gas near the house, it would be worth investigating the cost of it being fed to the house.
These costs can be high, but worth asking and money can be saved by DIY trenching within your own boundary

Let's say £2,000 for a boiler change, £2,000 for the gas connection.

You'll save £200 a year, maybe £300 as fuel prices go up.

So, break even in about 15 years.

By the way, I changed a water pipe three years ago. An independent wanted £1,000 for using a mole machine to tunnel under the drive. It's far too much for very little work, so I got some other builder people to dig up the drive and concrete that patch. Now I have an ugly drive, and it will cost £1,000+ to restore it properly:o.

Looked into changing bits associated with the boiler as its very limited to what i can do with it,but its sooo old its not really an option, heating cant go on with out the water but water can go on without the heating, water too hot, boiler turns itself off!!
A strange set up with no valve in place to change,so it must go!!!!!

I dont know where you got those prices from but you must have more money than me if you are prepared to pay that ammount.
I will roll my sleeves up,dig my own trench, get gas to the house for £265,British gas will install meter for free, ill rip out oil boiler and get a gas man in to connect new gas combi bolier on a day rate,i will not use him unless i get a day rate!
I aim for under £2000 all up and running.
    Watch this space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the replies though people, its been a help!!!
