As they are refusing to give you a quote when you speak to them, there's not a lot you can do - maybe a written complaint might get you somewhere, but they aren't obliged to give everyone a quote!

GSMAnon read the post before yours - don't muck around with your dob or anyone elses on insurance quotes as it looks fraudulent.

Also some insurers do lock you out if you simply put in what they consider too many quotes in their systems. In my case it happened when I tried to buy a quote but as I used a real email address I brought the policy over the phone using the quotation number.

Well only Elephant refuses to give me a quote, and only on the online system - I can get quotes on the phone.

The other 3 (Admiral, Bell, Diamond) give me quotes online, but the premium is around £90 more expensive when I use my real name over a false name.

I just called them about it and they just gave me a very general explanation of how every detail I give them is checked against all the information they can obtain about me, including information from credit reports, etc, and that even my name can increase the premium if that name is linked to some sort of negative information. At the time they said they weren't able to ascertain precisely which information was inflating the premium but the agent gave me his contact details and said it would be passed on for investigation, but that I won't be able to hear back or call them about it until January.

As I said, I can think of nothing on my credit report that would make me more likely to make fraudulent claims or give false details - I'm quite happy to provide proof for all the information I'll use when I erect a policy, and I also intend to pay the premiums annually and not in monthly instalments, meaning they don't have to worry about whether or not I have a good history of repayments (which I do, anyway - I've never missed a payment or gone over a limit in my life!).

    Never use your real details.
You probably have been locked out for quote massaging.
Always use a false name, close address, and generic car.
Bit late now I'm afraid, but use that for any other quote from now on.

If you do that make sure you tick/untick the boxes stating you don't want further correspondence from them.

I keep getting bl**dy insurance letters from insurers due to one of my neighbours being too stupid to do that.

So does anybody have any ideas for how to rectify this situation?

Who could I contact and what could I say?

Exactly the same happens to me and my husband, and we've had 3 cars insured with them for the last 10 years.

Over the years I've got 'new' quotes with all companies on all cars - so that's 12 quotes a year. Seems to have caused some kind of blockage.

I just do a new quote with a slightly different name, and then phone them and get them to match it. ;)
Science adjusts its views based on what's observed.
Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

Ok, great. And the price won't suddenly jump up when they change it to my correct name over the phone?

Can you use your first name and second name in the box, I would doubt they could find an excuse to void a policy based on you giving your full name, rather than a shortened one.

Don't get more than one quote that way though, put it in, buy the policy.
But be squeaky clean on the details now though, you will certainly set the alarms off if you need to claim.
  • I too got 'locked out' of getting a quote from admiral etc after doing 'too many' searches on comparison websites/then editing them on their own websites. In the end I took one of the 1st quotes I did that they emailed me.
All I did was add/ take away drivers/ alter details such as where I would park the car (road vs. car park) and profession and excesses.
Bit cheeky of them to do it as all we are trying to do is get a bargain for what is a v. expensive product.
Admiral/elephant etc were also about £300 cheaper than all the other companys I had tried so for me it was worth just taking the 1st quote I had!
