Hello forum members,
I need some help. I am getting someone to come in and put in some ceiling/spot or recessed lighting, in total about 8 in a fairly small room, about 3.5m by 3.5m. He suggested 8 spot lights. He also suggested putting in transformers for each as it will be energy saving and will be cost effective. I am also getting him to put in 2 bedside reading LED lights which current has 2 normal bedside lighting in place. How much do you think the job will cost? In the past, I received a quote of £150 for the job which I thought was cheap (excl materials). Is this about the standard price? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

£150 is a bit steep for half a days work in my opinion, and yes doubters im qualified, but if its a company with a reciept then its better than some fly by night who might do a rough job and you have no comeback!!
In cases electrical,it does pay to get it done properly,if you are not able to do it yourself .

So what will the spark do for the other half a days money/work?
£150 is not a bad price to that work if you can get it done for that.0 -
sounds too cheap to me - for 8 good quality lights you'd be looking at nearly £150 alone. I don't think you need 8 in a room that size - what sort of room is it? Kitchen, bedroom? also they are not energy saving - if you think about it, 8 lights at 50W each is 400W. A single pendant light is max 100W so even if you had two in the room before, you'd be doubling the amount of electricity you'd use0

Sounds too cheap to me as well I normally work at £25 - £30 a light fitting including materials and customers normally say I'm very responsible priced compared to other retailers
Do some more research into them
See if they are listed on

It may also worth going on https://www.checkatrade.com and getting some quotes they are all vetted so you know they are qualified and insured
Remember pay cheap pay twice
Or even worse with electric's pay cheap pay with your lifeHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Thanks all. Well, £150 is the labour and excludes the lighting. He said he can help me get the lighting and he suggest those with individual transformers. According to him, this is 'quite energy-saving'..
So would you say that on average, per light fitting will cost about £20?
The lighting is for a living room which is quite dim and I find reading and general activity quite hard..0 -
Transformers do not save energy. LED or compact florescent lights do - but these are much more than £20 per light.
Down lights won't necessarily give you better light for reading - they give spots of light rather than a good overall light.
Better to look at a floor or table reading light that you plug in to a socket
What is the lighting in the room at the moment?0 -
I recently tried some cheaper led lamps to fit in gu10 compared them with some Phillips £25 each ones and not massive difference and only cost me £5 each
