They can both be marked very badly by oils and grease and in I my experience granite can chip fairly easily but not as easily as marble which will also chip quite badly.
Get a lamitate worktop from jolly old B&Q and change it in 5 years !!!!!!!!!!
I can't say I have ever had a problem with oil or grease marks on my granite worktop - although limescale is more of a problem -especially on black.
I would seriously suggest looking at a company called Diapol. They were recommended by a friend and their prices are amazing. I had my worktops done by them about 3 years ago and they were literally half the price of other places. You can do an online quote if you have rough measurements to hand.

My personal view of Corian etc. is that it looks and feels like public toilets - admittedly the rather nicer ones in department stores etc. I don't think you can beat granite for appearance and quality.
Someone else I know has just ordered a slate worktop from a company in Whales though - don't know anything about it in terms of looks or cost though.0 -
I totally agree with JAP200, Diapol are very good indeed. Also, you might want to check out a company called Rock Revelations as well in Kettering (i think).
We too are currently looking to granite work tops for our kitchen and came across Corian as well. Can not for the life of me remember where but the general advise was granite is a lot better, which is what we are having.
I will ask the wife where she got this info from as I have asked to look after the work tops whilst i look after the rest of the building work."I think I spent 72.75% of my life last year in the office. I need a new job!!"0 -

I've never heard of limescale problems on granite, that's a new one. For every positive statement for granite there seems to be a negative one. I:D quite like the sound of this stuff...

It's made up of a 93% mixture of granite and quartz with 7% of additives including resins and is non porous....sounds great. It may not look as natural as granite but at least I wouldn't have to worry about staining.Live for today and don't worry about tomorrow!!:EasterBun0 -
Help Wanted -I just looked back at my post and noticed I hadn't mentioned that Zodiaq is 93% quartz with a polymer binder. Much like Technistone.
Zodiaq is also available in a range of 'concrete' matt finish colours, but as the OP Tracyk asked for Black without sparkly bits my comment stands - Vortex Black and Abyss black are two options.0 -
I've had a few more tips re a Granite worksurface so I've decided to take the chance and go for it. One guy I spoke to has had his for 8 years and loves it. He didn't have any marks, stains or problems of any kind and he said that if there was a staining problem it could be polished out. Finally a decision and if it's the wrong one I'll just have to live with it;)Live for today and don't worry about tomorrow!!:EasterBun0

If you put a fairly hot pan on your worksurface, you'll get the following reaction:
Granite - May leave a slight mark if really hot, but you'd be relatively ok.
Quartz - Same as above, but lighter quartz colours may leave yellow ring.
Corian - IT WILL MELT!
I followed this advice, and haven't looked back since! If in doubt, there's a really good company who project managed and installed all the stone throughout my house. They are called Macpherson Design Consultants. I think the website is macphersondesign.co.uk
They were always happy to provide impartial advice throughout my project.0
