Walmsleys-what would you do

Options
In may my mum ordered a leather sofa and two chairs from walmsleys-and paid her 10% deposit of £130. That was end of may and we were told 10 weeks max-but possibly only 6.

So after 6 weeks-I called in every week-only to keep on getting fobbed off.

Aug 31-our store closed and many branches were sold off. I tried another branch that was still open and was told mum would get her suite.

About mid oct -I took a phone call to say that the suite had been delivered. When the salesman told me the colour-I knew it was the wrong one.

Last week and almost 7 months later-mum's suite arrived in store.

Now after turning super sleuth and finding out that there were some stores open-no one contacted me -and the head office number just rang engaged for hours-I had decided that mum had said goodbye to her deposit.

With all the hassle-not to mention lack of good information-I said to the salesman I think it would only be fair for mum to receive some good compensation-because mum has dementia and has forgotten all about the sofa-especially as the store in town has closed and she couldn't go in to see the sofa to remind herself.

They got back to me and offeredher £50- they still want £1019. So I now have the job of trying to persuade mum to part with all this money when she is completely oblivious to it all.

Plus the january sales are on-even walking away from her deposit-she could still get a nice sofa for less -maybe.

The other thing to consider is-when mum chose the new sofa-her other leather one looked a mess. She had just had her house refurbed-and it was covered in dust and grime.

Well you should see it now-it looks immaculate-shiny ox blood leather-it looks brand new.

She was very ill (pneumonia) when all of this went on-since then she has had two foreign holidays in the sun-and is miles better-and can't wait to go away again-we've only been back home two weeks.

So what would you do?

If the store had come back with a really good offer-say asked her for a further £500-my decision would be easier-but £1000 will buy her a lot of holiday.

to be honest, and if your mum really "doesnt have a clue about it", i would walk away having forked out a £130 deposit and get another one elsewhere.

Its the lesser of 2 evils

  • If she doesnt really need a sofa, don't get one. Think of it as £1019 saved instead of £130 lost.

(I am assuming she can get out of the contract and only lose the deposit)

yes-I think so-will need to check.

It does seem a bit stupid doesn't it to spend all that money on something she no longer needs.

I never expected her to be able to go on holiday after the pneumonia-so concentrated on getting her house as lovely as possible-then with the delays and her own suite restored to its former glory-it just seems more appropriate to take her back to the sunshine.

    Thanks I appreciate the comments.
