Totally fed up with my hair!

Sorry to go on about my barnet again but I really am fed up now. I didn't bother with the GHDs after being advised that other brands are just as good. I settled on the Babyliss ones for about £28 in Boots - great when I first used them and not to hot but after an hour my hair was flyaway and pouffy again and I did use protection with them.

A friend of mine has the same sort of hair as me and she says she just lets hers dry naturally, uses no heat on it whatsoever and then just sprays with hairspray once dry and it looks great, really sleek and with volume. I've tried the same and it just doesn't work like that for me. My friend is in the menapause also.

All I want is sleek hair that stays put and doesn't turn into a wispy frizzball the minute I have it down. Now I am considering the following options:

Blow it and risk buying the GHDs.

Stop using heat on it and just spend more on haircare and treatments and treat it gently and wear it up all the time until it improves.

I do need a trim which helps for a while but it soon goes the same again. Please don't advise me to have my hair cut as it doesn't suit me short, I have it just above shoulder length at the moment.

I feel a total and utter mess. I've tried everything, expensive salon products, cheaper products, serums, sprays, leave in conditioners and I just don't want, and can't afford to waste any more money.

Please help :)

Have u tried coconut oil? I have that on my hair and hair scrunched up for work all the time then on my days off I wash it out and blow dry it. My hair looks great.....but just for those two days. Sad but such is the menopause.
  • have you thought about getting a brazillian blow dry?

ive not had one but the results are meant to be fantastic for smoothing hair and making it sleek.

What do you mean by fly aways and pouffy? Static? Hair not staying straight? Frizz? Split ends? What heat protection do you use?
If it's just your hair not staying smooth and straight but is in good condition then you sound like you need to use something, probably a serum or hair oil, which stops flyaways and is "humidity resistant" iykwim. Try something like frizz ease after straightening, lots of people have success with it.
Also, try to straighten your hair at least 30 minutes before you leave the house.
If you're straightening your hair because you want it to be smoother and don't care about straightness then don't bother straightening it, just use a smoothing serum or hair oil when wet and blow dry it on a cool setting.

  • Hi, thank you for your replies. I have tried coconut oil and argan oil but still no success, I have also tried Frizz Ease hair serum and its helped a bit but not a lot. I don't fancy a Brazilian blow dry because of the expense and it might not last for long. My hair is naturally straight, or at least it was, but now I am going through the menopause its gone very wispy and just sticks out and looks thin and just not in place. To me it looks frizzy but not like tight frizz as in when your hair is permed and gone frizzy, it just never feels right when I have it down. I'd put a photo on here but can't work out how to do it, I've tried to cut and paste one but for some reason it won't do it.

I'd like my hair straight like they can do it in the salon but it never goes that way when I do it. The heat protection I use is a serum, I've tried those sprays and they just dry my hair.

I don't know whether or not to persevere with the straightners but I feel I maybe damaging my hair more. Its so tempting to get GHDs but its a lot of money if its not going to work.

A BBD lasts around 3 months if you wash your hair every day. I've had it and it lasted over 4 months. A friend had it, only washes their hair every 3-4 days and it's lasted more than 6 months already! I've never paid more than £60 for it.

The Babyliss Big Hair is fabulous for getting a professional blow dry at home. It's about £30 online.

Not that I'm a DM reader but thought maybe you should read this article about Brazilian Blow Drying

  • I wash and straighten my frizzy bushy hair every day. People think I am mad because I will even wash and straighten it when I am going to the hairdressers! Some can't bear to leave the house without their make up on, I have to do my hair!!

I use a variety of stuff, my latest one is this http://www.feelunique.com/p/Schwarzkopf-Professional-BC-Bonacure-Sealed-Ends-75ml.

Which I use this in addition to this http://www.boots.com/en/TRESemme-Salon-Smooth-Serum-30ml_1222306/.

I have GHDs which I think are great, but I also have a set of these, which I think are pretty good too http://www.amazon.co.uk/Remington-S9950-Shine-Therapy-Straightener/dp/B001A25P2A/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1325113751&sr=8-5.

One thing I have found that has really improved the condition of my hair, is that I now don't use a shampoo and conditioner every day. My hair seems to be much better since I started conditioning my hair once a week.

Although I do use Frizz Ease, I find I can only use it occassionally otherwise my hair gets very greasy.

Argan Oil products are meant to be really good.

Takes a while for the word 'formaldehyde' to appear. Every one of the BBD salons I've been to use a formaldehyde-free solution.

But that's a bit too honest for the sensationalist DM ;)

Well, I did wonder but having never heard of BBDs before (hence googling) I was more than a little concerned when I read that :o

Hi, when you say you condition your hair just once a week does this mean you just use shampoo on its own the rest of the time? I have tried to skip conditioner sometimes but then my hair feels more flyaway. I've also got a spray leave in conditioner but that makes my hair look dull. I also find that serum can weigh my hair down and make it greasy so I can't win whatever I use.
