Electric Shower question?

I am thinking of getting an electric shower fitted, I was wondering if you need to have gas and hot water to use it? Like if my boiler wasn't supplying hot water but I had an electric shower would I still have hot water?

Thanks

You need an adequate electric power supply and adequate mains cold water pressure. An electrician & a plumber would be required.

Yes, the one advantage of an electric shower is that it will still operate if your boiler breaks down, it requires a mains cold feed only (and a power supply obviously).

  • thanks, what do you mean by adequate power suppy? and as far as the water pressure is concerned the water comes out of he cold tap really really fast, like gushes out so I thik that would be alright?

You need a dedicated circuit (of the correct cable rating for the load drawn by your shower) run from your CU to the shower point, protected by an RCD, plus an isolator switch outside the shower room.
You need sufficient water pressure to work the shower properly, a 'fast gush' is not a scientific test. Get a plumber in to quote and they will be able to tell you.

Ok I have to ask this (even though I've been desperately resisting) why would you need gas to run an electric shower? You need to get someone in to quote the job for you.

    Cheers

They might be thinking power shower rather than an electric shower.

Yes they could be but the context suggests not - to me anyway. :D

Typically a 10mm2 cable is recommended to allow for a say 10.5 kW shower. Other factors are involved such as length of cable and whether cable is enclosed or exposed to determine size more accurately.
If you choose a lower power rated shower heater then you may find the water temperature / flow rate is unsatisfactory.

thanks for all the advice everyone, Can anyone give me a rough estimate on how much it would be to fit the shower, or supply and fit? Are you looking at £200 or more like £500 or even more? I know it depends on circumstances, but hypothetically if everything was fine.
